Our Commitment to Accuracy
Our articles are researched using reliable sources, including official government resources, insurance carriers, enrollment platforms, and recognized industry information.
For Medicare information, we rely on official sources such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Medicare.gov. For other insurance topics, we use current information from applicable insurance carriers, enrollment platforms, and official government resources when available.
When information is still pending or may vary by state, carrier, location, eligibility, or plan year, we will clearly explain what is known and encourage you to review your options with a licensed insurance broker.
Here's the Short Answer
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that the temporary Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration will end after the 2026 plan year. CMS has also released preliminary 2027 figures, including:
- National Average Monthly Bid Amount: $296.05
- Base Beneficiary Premium: $41.33
At this time, Medicare beneficiaries do not need to make any changes based on this announcement alone. We're still waiting for CMS to release each plan's final premiums and benefits before Annual Enrollment begins.
What Is Changing?
Over the past two years, CMS has operated a temporary demonstration program that provided additional financial support to stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plans while major changes under the Inflation Reduction Act were being implemented.
CMS has announced that this temporary demonstration will conclude after the 2026 plan year. According to CMS, prescription drug plan sponsors now have enough experience operating under the redesigned Part D benefit, and the additional stabilization payments are no longer considered necessary.
What We Know Today
Based on CMS's announcement:
- The Premium Stabilization Demonstration will end after 2026.
- The 2027 Base Beneficiary Premium will be $41.33.
- The Inflation Reduction Act's premium stabilization provisions continue to limit how the national base beneficiary premium is calculated through 2029.
What We Don't Know Yet
This is the most important part.
As of today, CMS has not yet released the final 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D plan details for beneficiaries.
We're still waiting to learn:
- Final monthly premiums for individual plans
- Which plans will be available in each county
- Changes to prescription drug formularies
- Pharmacy network updates
- Final Medicare Plan Finder information
CMS traditionally releases this information closer to the Annual Enrollment Period.
What This Means for Florida Medicare Beneficiaries
At this point, there is no reason to panic or rush into changing plans.
Many headlines focus on national numbers, but your actual monthly premium and coverage will depend on:
- Where you live
- Which Part D plan you choose
- The insurance company offering the plan
- Your prescription medications
Once CMS releases the finalized 2027 plans, you'll be able to compare your options based on complete information—not just early announcements.
Evelyn's Recommendation
If you're currently enrolled in Medicare, my advice is simple:
Don't make decisions based on headlines alone.
Every year, Medicare plans can change premiums, provider networks, and prescription drug coverage. The best time to review your coverage is when the official plan information becomes available before Annual Enrollment.
I'll continue monitoring CMS updates and will update this article as new information is released.
